DB Claims Regular Season District Soccer Crown

KINGSPORT - In a muddy mess, Dobyns-Bennett did what it had to do. The Indians beat homestanding Sullivan South 2-1 Tuesday in muck and mire to clinch the 2003 District 1-AAA regular-season boys soccer crown.

Sophomore forward Robert Stratton scored both goals for D-B.

Spring break, horrendous weather and a host of other problems kept D-B (8-0-0, 5-0-0) out of action for the past 18 days. It had been 21 days since the Rebels (5-4-0, 1-3-0) last played.

The long layoff combined with the terrible field conditions showed in the game.

"It was a rutty mess out there,'' said D-B head coach Bill McCloskey. "It just didn't allow you to play.''

As tough as things were, the Indians managed to find just enough dry ground to notch a pair of goals. Seventeen minutes into the game, D-B junior forward Rhyne Hammitt blasted a shot toward the South goal.

Rebels goalkeeper Tyler Cole made a brilliant save, but the rebound went right onto the foot of Stratton, who slipped it into the back of the net.

Just past the midway point of the second half, the Indians were on the move again. Sophomore midfielder Brice Jones worked his way through the Rebels' penalty area. Seeing Stratton streaking toward the goal, Jones sent the ball between the South defenders and Stratton one-touched it passed Cole.

That goal proved to be the game winner as South got on the board with five minutes left in the contest. Rebels freshman midfielder Bobby Austin launched a rainbow from the left side that sailed over the D-B defense and Indians' goalkeeper Ethan Gouge into the right corner of the net.

South put on a furious rush in the final minutes but couldn't manage to even the score.

"Overall, I don't think we were as intense as we could have been for a game against D-B,'' said South head coach Tom LaGuardia. "That's been our problem all season.

"With eight underclassmen on the field, we just don't have the experience necessary to elevate our game to another level.''

Although it was an important win for his program, McCloskey would have liked a better performance from his team.

"Winning the regular-season title is nice, but it takes something away from it because we played so poorly,'' McCloskey said. "It would have been nicer to have been more clinical.''

D-B had 10 shots on goal to four for South.
